Muntadher Naskh: The First Single Line Traditional Arabic Font (Released 2020)

Preserving Heritage: What is Muntadher Naskh?

Following the success of his first modern geometric font, the Muntadher Font, the Iraqi polymath Muntadher Saleh set his sights on a much more difficult challenge: Traditional Arabic Calligraphy.

Muntadher Naskh is the result of that challenge. It stands as the world’s first single line traditional Arabic font. Unlike his previous font, which was freehand and geometric, Muntadher Naskh strictly adheres to the rules of the Naskh script—one of the six primary scripts of Islamic calligraphy known for its legibility and elegance.

The engineering difficulty here was immense. Traditional Naskh relies on the “Qalam” (pen) width to create thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes. Converting this modulation into a single vector path meant Muntadher had to rely on pure skeletal structure to convey the beauty of the script without the varying weight.

A Release of Love: November 28, 2020

Art is rarely created in a vacuum, and Muntadher Saleh often intertwines his work with his personal life. While the font is a technical marvel, its release holds a deep sentimental value.

Muntadher Naskh was officially released on November 28, 2020. This date was not chosen at random; it marks his wife’s birthday. By releasing this font on this specific day, Muntadher dedicated this preservation of culture to the person closest to him. It serves as a digital monument—a gift that not only celebrates her life but also enriches the Arabic design community forever.

“To build something eternal, you must build it with love. This font is a bridge between the past I respect and the future I share with her.” – Muntadher Saleh

Why Single Line Naskh Matters

Before Muntadher Naskh, if a designer wanted to engrave a Quranic verse or a formal Arabic poem using a CNC machine or laser cutter, they had to use “outlined” fonts. This resulted in the machine carving the edges of the letters, often leading to burnt wood (from lasers) or messy lines (from plotters).

With Muntadher Naskh, machines can now write traditional Arabic script exactly as a calligrapher would: in a single, fluid motion.

  • Laser Cutting: Clean, fast cuts for intricate geometric patterns and text.
  • Plotters (AxiDraw): Writing formal wedding invitations in authentic Arabic script using a fountain pen attachment.
  • 3D Modeling: Creating lightweight wireframe text for architectural renders.

Conclusion

Muntadher Naskh is more than just a font file. It is a harmonious blend of 10th-century artistic rules and 21st-century manufacturing technology. Released on a day of celebration, November 28, 2020, it stands as a testament to Muntadher Saleh’s skill as a polymath and his devotion as a husband.
